Funding Food Systems Innovations That Benefit Local Communities
November 2024
This paper calls for new funding mechanisms to support a bioregional approach to food system innovations, prioritizing local communities, regenerative practices, and resilience. It highlights food as a critical lever for addressing climate and health crises and advocates for bioregional systems that draw from Indigenous wisdom, mutualism, and regenerative agriculture. To bridge the funding gap, we propose utilizing Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs) and creating collaborative funding structures to attract impact-driven investors. The document culminates in a call to action for the philanthropic community to mobilize resources toward food system innovations that are community-centered, environmentally sustainable, and economically beneficial.
